The educational conditions in Denver are inadequate. Students are living and learning in terrible conditions while teachers are being cut off from the staff. Many schools have been going through tough conditions trying to keep up with their wealthier neighboring schools and even trying to keep the school open. On Tuesday, Colorado will be asking with one of the most ambitious and risk-full grants in the country. They will be asking for a one billion dollar tax increase. This enormous increase will benefit many schools in Denver that are trying to keep their heads above water. The decision to increase taxes by one billion dollars for school funding will be very hard to make. It will be very difficult for politicians to convince voters to agree to raising taxes. A citizen who does not have any children or is sending their children to a school where funding is satisfactory will not want to increase their tax payments. Denver will end up having to give forty three percent of its budget to school funding. Trying to increase tax payments by any amount will never be easy.
Let’s hope the people of Colorado will do the right thing and vote to raise taxes for schools. Otherwise, they may find themselves old and retired and being governed by the same students who did not receive adequate education in Colorado. Imagine how terrifying this would be. They owe it to themselves to support their educational systems.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck to all those students and teachers who must deal with the harsh conditions at the school they attend or teach in. Hopefully, people living in Denver will have the decency to help each other out. I, as a student, understand how difficult it may be for not only the students, but the teachers as well. Interesting article, Jason!
ReplyDeleteSince we attend a private school, which is not really having economic troubles we do not see problems similar to this case. A person who does not have children will careless about the education in schools and paying for others but the parent of the child who attends the school will be terrified and help in any possible way because that is the future of the parent's child.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the school system is extremely important, Colorado should not spring this high tax on its residents. It is commendable that politicians are concerned with education, but the high tax will not be popular among those who, as Jason mentioned, will not be affected by the improvement. People are struggling to pay the current tax and this raise might strain families even further. They should look into other ways to help improve the education system. Terrific article choice!
ReplyDeleteEducation is an important and necessary factor in a child's life. I definitely think that the school conditions should be solved immediately, but a billion dollar tax raise seems a bit drastic and kind of short notice. As Annie said, not everyone can afford to submit hard-earned money, restricting their own families from what was already difficult to acquire. Great job with the statistics and with keeping things on point, Jason!
ReplyDeleteEducation is essential to every one of those students in Colorado. Their future is in the hands of those children who are not receiving the best education, due to the poor conditions. Hopefully, the people of Denver will make the right decision for their children. It may be hard for certain people or families, but they should just try to make the best of it, since it will become a serious problem later in time. Fascinating blog, Jason!
ReplyDeleteThe schooling system and education in general are huge contributors to citizens, especially those who are currently attending schools across Colorado. But raising their already high taxes even higher? There was not any other solution? Education deserves support and should gradually develop into more complex and informative systems, but only when the time is right financially. Outstanding job laying out the facts, Jason.
ReplyDeleteAll children deserve to receive an education in this world. It is unfortunate to hear about the budget cuts taking place in Colorado. Asking for one million dollars is a bit risky and overwhelming. However, parents should sacrifice a little bit out of their pockets, in order to save their childrens education and future. Jason used great detail and statistical information. Excellent job Jason!
ReplyDeleteTo increase the taxes of Denver to 1 billion dollars is absolutely absurd! Of course it is for the greater cause of an education for children, however this major increase in taxes may pressure and break down families to come up with money that they do not have. It is important for the people of Denver to help one another out in situations like this, but it should not reach this extreme.
