Chocolate? Or Brain Food?

"Chocolate may help keep brain healthy, sharp in old age, study says."
By: Melissa Pandika
Source: LA Times

In this La Times article Melissa Pandika tells her audience about a study done by neurologists. Researchers noted that chocolate can be helpful in improving brain health and thinking skills for the elderly. A group of researchers concluded that older people who did poorly on a reasoning and memory test had less blood flowing to their brains. Neurology researchers wanted to see if consuming chocolate could help improve blood flow to the brain for elderly people. They put together 60 elderly people for their new study. The subjects drank two cups of chocolate every day for 30 days, they had to complete a test before and after each cup. Most subjects showed major improvement after drinking hot chocolate every day for one month. The people who initially did not do well on the test showed an 8% improvement in blood flow to their brains and a one minute faster reaction time on the test. Although the researchers discovered that chocolate does help improve brain health for the elderly they have not figured out what chemical or substance triggers the improvement and are still trying to find out what it is. If they eventually find out what the substance is they could even turn that into a pill form.
This article is very informative and could be very helpful especially for elderly people. Researchers proved that consuming chocolate could help blood flow to an elderly persons brain which would most likely improve their memory and keep their brain healthier and sharper. Since most elderly people are not physically active this could be a way to help get more blood pumping throughout their body and especially to their brains.

  1. If this article truly is accurate, I would not mind eating chocolate as a form of medicine when I do get older. It is really quite amazing how the most simplest of things that have been with the human race for the longest time are just recently being found as medication.

  2. This is an outstanding example of the antique methods our ancestors used to use as medicine to cure illnesses. It is rather impressive the new facts and techniques doctors and experimenters are discovering about food that has been used for centuries. I would love to be sitting there eating as much chocolate from a fondue and have a stranger approach me asking if that much chocolate is not healthy for me and i casually respond, "No, my doctor prescribed it,"

The fact that this has come from neurologists who have been researching this topic, establishes a very trustworthy source. Since there are only a few people who do not enjoy eating chocolate, everybody else now has a new reason to eat one of their favorite sweets.

  6. This article is extremely fascinating to anyone who might read it. It is especially interesting to one in their teenage years, because the younger a person is the less they might care about the amount of sugar they consume each day. Every child would want to discover the fact that consuming chocolate could be a form of medicine. Great work and terrific topic! Being a person who loves chocolate, one will easily be captivated by this article.

  7. First off, to think something delicious can be healthy for you is amazing news. Also, knowing that chocolate will improve elders memory makes them want chocolate more than they usually do. This means that I am having chocolate for breakfast everyday to improve my grades. If only this was really true then chocolate will be selling ten times faster and that way it would increase the economy. In other words, chocolate is helpful in multiple ways.

  8. Now I know what to eat when I am older! It is truly an interesting article, but what is far more interesting is how a candy bar often consumed for pleasure is now revolutionizing medicine. It might not cure cancer, but it does help stimulate the brain in a way that it probably has not been worked. Thanks for sharing this topic, makes me not regret the three chocolate bars I had today.

  9. I suppose there is no downside to eating chocolate anymore. For the longest time in history, men have given women chocolate on Valentine’s Day and other occasions as a gift. Researchers discovered that eating chocolate releases endorphins in the brain that make women feel extremely happy. Are not men clever? Now that this article has found another benefit to eating chocolate, everyone should eat chocolate, be merry, and smart at the same time.
